As the Atari fellows over at Ataricrypt report, there is a proof of concept for an ST port of Doom. Apparently Jonas Eschenburg who recently surprised with hisย new voxelspace engine has now delivered a preview of the legendary shooter running on an ST. Steve from Ataricrypt investigated deeper and also provides a video of the game engine running on his page.

Not sure "running" is properly used here, it is way too slow to be playable. Better turn to projects such as DREAD even though it is currently is sleep mode...

I'm interested to see how this turns out.ย
To get anything playable, you'll need acceleration, probably hefty acceleration.ย
At least Ataricrypt is showing as running on 8/16 Mhz 68000 and not PiStorm.

To my eye, looks like its taking 200+ vbls to render a single frame...!

I really liked Jonas' statement on Ataricrypts page about his personal background and the reasons of doing this for the ST.

As a raw port of Doom, it's not surprising that it runs like it does.
It's almost like people have forgotten the Falcon Bad Mood project. It took a herculean effort with high use of the DSP by one of the most skilled persons we have in the scene to get a playable game out of it.

I think we're fooling ourselves to think the original Doom will run well on an original ST(e), but I understand the fun in doing a proof of concept (and being featured in Toms Hardware!) :-) ย  Did a quick measure from a spot in the video and it was 3.5 seconds for 1 frame.ย  It needs to run 35 times faster to reach 10 fps.

Sorry for being the grumpy party pooper.

Well said, Evl. What makes me really sad about all this hype is that the only *really* new element here (in comparison to the existing Doom SDL port available for good 20+ years even on ST if you bothered compiling it, see BadWolf's video in AtariCrypt's post) is the usage of dithering in comparison to the grayscale palette. And of course the dithering makes it even slower.
It's a nice little project but the attention is completely undeserved.
